Cobalt - Bourbon Nightmares

Cobalt (not the black metal duo of the same name) have today released Bourbon Nightmares: their seminal release.

Across the 6 tracks they showcase their multitude of influences - though keeping for the most part to a central sound which keeps a nostalgic feeling Nu-Metal vibe throughout. Each song shows a different side, from the Adema/Disturbed inspired "Warrior" to Southern grooves felt in the tracks "Martyr" and the eponymous "Bourbon Nightmares". I would describe their overall sound as a mix of Machine Head, Black Stone Cherry, Godsmack and a light sprinkling of Rob Zombie.

I felt whilst listening that the production could have been a little cleaner, with the occasional bit of feedback showing in the songs, and quite often the entire song could be lost in the sometimes droning guitar; which is reminiscent in places of early grindcore. Though by no means are the songs played badly, and this issue does not plague the whole release. I honestly think that the songs would translate better with a better mix and having heard their live sound already I can attest it is definitely full of melody.

Although the music itself is not groundbreaking in originality (a feat becoming increasingly difficult these days!) the range between each songs keeps the feel fresh.

I noticed through the EP that the vocal style shifted a lot, and this leant a lot to the songs, giving real atmosphere at times and giving the appropriate levels of attitude in others. During the more toned down sections I was taken back to the era of Nu-Metal with Spineshank-esque moodiness and others with bellowed vocals akin to Pantera's Phil Anselmo.

For me personally the latter 3 tracks of the album are particular standouts filled to the brim with Southern groove and again this is when a live setting would improve the vibe even further with copious amounts of adult beverages and headbangery.

Overall a reasonable first effort from the Inverness 5 piece. I'm definitely going to be keeping an eye out for them on the live scene and will be checking out their future releases.
