The Dead XIII - Dark Days

The album starts with 'Bloodlines'. An eerie synth intro gives way to a horror punk sounding riff and snarling vocals. It has a dark gothic feel with the synth giving an extra dimension.

Next up is the title track 'Dark Days'. A catchy synth intro turns into an industrial vibe which brings to mind Rammstein.

'Last Stand' has a heavier sound to it, but still has an industrial feel.

'Killers' ups the ante for me, as its intro riff reminds of 'Psalm 69' era Ministry. The song then goes into a dark metalcore affair.

'The Fallen' shows another dimension to the band's sound. An orchestral intro leads into a 'Clayman' era In Flames-style verse which in turn changes to a gothic industrial chorus.

'Vigil' is a soft piano intro for the following track 'Angels'. This is definitely not the song by cocky poseur Robbie Williams. This is a pacy metalcore riot which is followed by the similarly banging tune called 'Play Hell'. These songs both bring the awesome Crossfaith to mind.

'Insomnia' starts with a riff that has heavy groove written all over it. We then get back to the more industrial sound before 'Redemption' returns to the chuggy guitars and synth which remind me of Crossfaith, but the choruses go down a more melodic route.

'Curtain Call' is an interlude which leads nicely into the final track 'From Beyond'. Probably the heaviest song on the album, it has the melodic death metal feel of old school In Flames.

Overall this is a great album which starts slowly, but gets better and better with each song. I'd personally recommend listening to 'Angels' and 'Play Hell' which are both certified bangers.
